But she's not in America, so when the army comes knocking, she gets going with nary a protest. Log In. Topics Character Roles Protagonist, Antagonist Character Clues.

Character Clues Character Analysis Actions People's actions when left to their own devices especially in times of war and survival really say a lot about their characters.

Direct Characterization Daisy's blunt, and she frequently tells us exactly who everyone is and what they're like without beating around the bush much.

Check it: Someone made cups of tea and they all stared at me like I was something interesting they'd ordered from a zoo and asked me lots of questions in a much more polite way than would ever happen in New York, where kids would pretty much wait for some grown-up to come in all fake-cheerful and put cookies on a plate and make you say your names.

Logging out…. Logging out You've been inactive for a while, logging you out in a few seconds I'm Still Here! One day, the farm is taken over by soldiers who separate the boys from the girls by sending them away to live at separate homes, and then separate farms.

Daisy and Piper are forced to put survival as their top priority and cannot look for the male members of their family.

Gradually finding their way back home, the two girls learn the harsh consequences of war and wait for their family in the barn house.

After the war ends, Daisy must deal with putting the pieces of her life back together and overcoming the terrible experience of war as she reunites with the forever changed members of her family, including a physically and emotionally scarred Edmond.

Near the end of the book, Daisy who had been pulled back to the US by her father goes back to the UK to see Edmond and the rest. Edmond, who thinks Daisy has broken their promise of always being together, refuses to see her at first.

However, he eventually accepts her once again. In the novel was adapted for radio by Elizabeth Burke. The novel was adapted into a film directed by Kevin Macdonald that was released in and starred Irish actress Saoirse Ronan playing the role of Daisy, with George MacKay as Edmond now written as the oldest cousin , Tom Holland as Isaac now the younger cousin and Harley Bird as Piper.

I think we were gypped and given a shallow view of a deep beautiful story. The meaning was lost in translation and the movie ends up being "sort of like a book I once I read" The book is leading up to the point 6 years after the end of the war when Daisy steps foot into the "white" garden and faces Edmond not Issac once again.

This is the real story, the ending, not the beginning and middle. The movie stops in the middle so all we are left with is a husk. The movie follows the main plot of the book in a thin manner and takes great liberties in writing for the screen.

The details of the war are changed to such a degree that I thought this must be a whole different war than portrayed in the book.

The military soldiers and people such as the McEvoys who take the girls in are made into dark cruel people when in fact they are good kind caring people who helped the girls.

The soldiers were not cruel, they were kind and helpful. The men were all a little in love with Pippa and her dog and took great pains to protect the girls.

I feel that much was lost in the movie in understanding the depth of love between all characters and too much was put on the brutalities suffered by the girls, brutalities that did not exist in the book.

As they say, if it doesn't move the plot along, trash it. So all of the wasted time being forced to dig though rotten piles of food, being treated cruelly by their hosts, and not being able to wash up should have gone into the trash.

None of this happened. In fact, they had it very well during their stay and the comforts they had were not made into a deal.

The relationships they formed are what made the story. Conversations between characters while working the orchards, the love of the soldiers for Pippa and her dog, the kindness of Major McEvoy, the military father who took the girls in, and the psychic connection between all the kids remove insight into the actions and emotions in later years after the war.

The movie starts out with a great soundtrack, and this is one thing that saves it, along with superb and strong acting by all, especially Saoirse Ronan.

This movie seemed to have been in and out of the theaters so quickly that I hardly knew it had existed. I finally did see it lately because of its cast.

With all three together, I had to see this film. The Film is an adaptation of a popular Young Adult novel of the same title. The YA epithet spanns a number of genres and was all the rage in films for the last decade or so.

They could be stand-alones or franchises, had a tween to late teen cast and often included elements of magic or the supernatural. Most were derived from novels which tended to be more popular than most of the filmed versions.

There has always been a novel vs film critical controversy. The general consensus is that a novel may take a long time to read and can do so much more than a film that it is unfair to compare the two.

This especially goes for the inevitable gripes about what parts of the book were left out. There is, however, still some room for criticism. Has the material been changed so much that the studio really just bought the name?

The YA audience seems to be particularly critical of the movie adaptations and often trashes these films online for valid or invalid reasons.

The criticisms were mainly about differences between book and film. Most book fans seem to not like things changed. There were many changes here, even over who lives and dies.

But the main ones were the ages of the characters Daisy: 15 book, about 18 film; brothers Eddie and Isaac: year-old twins book, 19 and 14 film.

An even older brother is non-existent in the film, and Joe, a minor neighborhood boy in the book is almost one of the family in this. In a time of terrorism and political troubles, a troubled teen, Daisy, is sent from America to live with her aunt and cousins in the beautiful English countryside.

This is very large scale, as news bulletins that Paris has been bombed appear on the airport screens as she arrives.

The cousins are friendly and older cousin Edmond has some kind of empathetic connection with animals. Her aunt is a well-known expert on terrorism and is called away to Geneva, leaving the four young ones including Joe to themselves.

Quickly Eddie and Daisy fall in love. After that they get separated and it becomes a story of trying to get back together at the farm.

The film was well-made with decent special effects and enough military equipment and wreckage to portray the war that has reached England.
